Appreciation vs. Appropriation in the Spiritual Community

Today, let’s explore cultural appropriation within the magical community. We'll explore what cultural appropriation is, what it is not, and how it manifests in our practices.

What is Cultural Appropriation?

Cultural appropriation occurs when individuals adopt elements of a culture that is not their own without proper understanding, respect, or permission. This often involves using cultural symbols, rituals, or traditions in a way that strips them of their original meaning and significance. It’s not just about borrowing but doing so without acknowledgment or genuine respect for the culture from which these elements originate.

What Cultural Appropriation is Not

Cultural appropriation does not mean you cannot appreciate or learn about other cultures. It’s about how you go about it. Respectful engagement with another culture, where you seek to understand its depth and meaning through proper channels, is not appropriation. For instance, approaching someone from that culture and asking to learn, or being invited to participate in their practices with their guidance, shows respect and appreciation.

Respectful Practices vs. Appropriation

Respect is key in how we learn and integrate aspects of other cultures into our own practices. If you see a cultural practice that resonates with you, and you want to incorporate it into your life, do so respectfully:

  1. Seek Proper Guidance: Approach someone from that culture and ask for permission to learn. Understand that some cultural practices are closed and only accessible to those born into that culture. If someone tells you that their practice is closed, believe them and respect that.
  2. Don’t Claim Ownership: Even if you are taught by someone from that culture, remember that these practices are not yours to claim. You should not teach or profit from them without explicit permission.
  3. Understand the Significance: Dive into the meanings and traditions behind these practices. It’s not just about the act but understanding its significance within its original context.

Examples of Cultural Practices:

Smoke Clearing vs. Smudging: Many cultures have smoke-clearing rituals. In Native American traditions, this might be called smudging, often involving white sage in a ceremonial context. Other cultures use different plants and methods. It’s crucial to distinguish between these practices and use appropriate terminology for the practice you’re adopting.

Spirit Animals and Guides: While some argue that the concept of spirit animals is exclusive to Native cultures, many traditions, including Jewish, have similar concepts of animal guides or spirits. It’s important to recognize the diversity of these practices across cultures and not claim them as uniquely belonging to one.

Reflect on Your Intentions

Before adopting practices from another culture, ask yourself why you are drawn to them. Are you seeking to fill a void in your own cultural understanding, or are you genuinely interested in the cultural richness and willing to engage respectfully? Also, consider the historical context and whether your cultural background has had a colonizing impact on the culture you wish to learn from.

Learning and Respecting Your Own Culture

While exploring other cultures, don’t neglect your own. Often, similar practices can be found within your cultural heritage, perhaps under different names or forms. Understanding your cultural roots can provide a richer, more respectful foundation for your spiritual practices.

Final Thoughts

Engaging with other cultures can be enriching and educational if done with respect and mindfulness. Always approach with a willingness to learn, respect boundaries, and honor the origins of the practices you adopt. This ensures that cultural appreciation does not turn into cultural appropriation.

Reflect on your current practices. Are there elements from other cultures that you haven’t fully understood or respected? Take time to research, seek permission, and engage with cultural practices authentically. Your spiritual journey will be richer and more respectful for it.
